font-family: arial;">Celebrating one month until COP 15 Copenhagen with a look at our work on the Nordhavnen Sustainable City Design Competition in 2008. This was an open competition for a multiple-phased sustainable development in an existing port area in the north of Copenhagen. The team was Dan Lenander, Michael Cannon, Ana Pinto da Silva and Cameron Hall.

From our narrative:

SPATIAL CONCEPT
The Nordhavnen proposal derives its essential character through the interweaving of its maritime and industrial history, creating new and distinct neighborhoods that celebrate sustainability. The existing historic industrial infrastructure is used to create distinct and recognizable districts strongly defined by water boundaries. Water elements strongly identify civic spaces which allow for connectivity between neighborhood districts. The districts are identified as follows:

1. KRONLOBSBASSINET
2. HAVNEBY
3. SKUDELOBET N
4. SKUDELOBET S
5. UNIVERSITY
6. ORESUND
7. FISKERIHAVNEN

The ecological and residential life of the project unifies these districts. We have chosen to create a new wetland resource to the north, with turbine wind generators helping to offset the power needs of the project as a whole. Both of these elements will be educational and tourism resources for the City.

SUSTAINABILITY

1. District Energy System
A subsurface infrastructure loop system connecting all major buildings will enable shared energy throughout the city. Office buildings share power during the day and are able to transfer excess energy to heat homes in the evening.

2. Wind Energy
Taking advantage of the site's location adjacent to the sea, additional wind turbines located north of the project site are proposed in order to generate energy for city-wide systems. Surface winds will allow for a series of 600 kW turbines with monopile foundations.

3. Vertical Farming and Green Roofs
Rooftops and terraces on nearly every building will have space allocated for agricultural production. This greenscape on top of the buildings will aid in offsetting the heat island effect of the new city by cooling building temperatures. The green roofscape will also provide biofiltration of airborne pollutants.

4. Recycling Existing Building Materials
We anticipate reusing existing materials such as concrete, metal, steel, wood and glass on site recycled into subsurface pavement systems and building materials. There is a valuable opportunity for the adaptive reuse of many of the existing historic structures to retain the history, materiality and character of the site.

5. Water
An efficient system of water reuse and recycling is implemented throughout Nordhavnen. A desalinization plant allows the surrounding seawater to be turned into potable water for residents, and in turn grey water is used for toilet flushing and irrigation. Our objective is to achieve a complete and functional water processing and use cycle which is entirely self-sufficient and balanced for each phase between site water supply and development demand.

6. Alternative Modes Of Transportation
The plan promotes a multi-modal system of transit, including light rail, boat/water taxis, and bicycles ahead of vehicles. A transit line is proposed to link in with the city-wide metro system, and is positioned to serve the majority of new residents in Nordhavnen...An extensive bicycle path network is incorporated into the plan's street grid as well as the open space park system, and is linked into the Copenhagen's green network of trails. A canal system is also proposed, bisecting the long piers to facilitate north-south travel by boat, both for residential and commercial transport.

7. Native Landscape Systems
The plan establishes a large wetland north of the site to help balance ecological systems, treating pollutants and aiding in water quality. Parks and open spaces throughout the plan will assist in treating runoff and bioremediation of urban toxins through the use of native plants and grasses.

8. Social Equity
Housing for all income levels is provided, as well as an extensive educational system to serve the community and complement the City's resources. In addition, the plan proposes community centers for each of the (6) neighborhoods, with social work programs, indoor and outdoor recreational facilities, day care facilities, and other facilities to foster community participation.

9. Jobs/Housing Balance
We anticipate several key industries to locate within the new Nordhavnen community to develop a new employment center for the City. With the eventual phasing out of the existing industrial operations, new businesses would include the Cruise Ship terminal and related maritime transit operations, tourism, university research and associated businesses, convention facilities, retail, construction and planning for each subsequent phase of sustainable city research and development.

More images to follow in the next post.

Welcome

Welcome to STAVE blog, our inaugural post, right after election day 2009.

Inspired today by Stefan Sagmeister's work on graphics for Casa da Musica in Porto.
